The National Railway Historical Society

About The NRHS

Founded in 1935, The National Railway Historical Society supports train, railway and station preservation projects with hundreds of thousands of dollars awarded in Heritage Grants, as well as education, photographic archives, events, publishing, standards definition and shared resources.

The national society holds an annual convention at various locations around the country featuring several rail excursions or visitations to historical sites. Other events include a board of directors meeting and the annual membership meeting, where NRHS matters are discussed and decided. There are usually seminars featuring local rail subjects, historical and otherwise. The conventions are great social events where members from different chapters around the country can share experiences and information. A great way to meet new friends!

There are also two conferences per year, usually 3-day events primarily for handling NRHS business matters but also including some local rail activities. Attendance is smaller than the convention but all members are welcome to attend. The conferences are typically held in the spring and fall, depending on the dates of the national convention.

Local chapters often assist in the planning and hosting of conventions and conferences. Lots of details and work but a rewarding experience. To attend, one must be a member of the national organization. Membership to the national organization can be attained by clicking this link.

NRHS members also receive the NRHS Bulletin, a long-standing publication
featuring rail history subjects and NRHS events. The NRHS News is published more frequently and covers events and various Chapter activities and restoration
projects. Click here to visit the NRHS News article that covered the 2016 national
convention held in Denver.

Please consider joining the NRHS. Your support makes the organization stronger and more influential in the world of rail history.
